Your sonographer will apply a small amount of warm gel to your abdomen and use a handheld probe to capture images of your baby. We'll talk you through everything we see in real time — explaining clearly and answering every question you have. The appointment is never rushed. In early pregnancy, a transvaginal scan (internal scan) is sometimes needed to obtain clearer images — particularly before 8 weeks. If this is recommended, your sonographer will explain why and ask for your consent before proceeding. You can decline at any time. During this period your baby has developed enough facial features to be clearly visible, while still having enough room in the womb to move freely. Getting the Best Images: Several factors affect the quality of 3D/4D images that are outside anyone's control, including your baby's position, placenta location and the amount of amniotic fluid present. We will do everything possible to obtain the best images for you. If we are unable to get the views you came for, please see our Rescan Policy.
