Baby Milestones: What to Expect in Your Baby’s First Year

Your baby’s first year is one of the most extraordinary periods of human development. In just twelve months, your tiny newborn will transform into a curious, communicative, mobile little person with a personality all of their own. Here is a guide to the key milestones you can look forward to — though remember, every baby develops at their own pace, and that is perfectly normal.

Baby doing tummy time, an important developmental milestone

0 to 3 Months: The Newborn Stage

In the earliest weeks, your baby is adjusting to the world outside the womb. During this stage you can expect your baby to begin tracking faces and objects with their eyes, grip your finger tightly, and make their first gurgling and cooing sounds. The highlight of these months is the first real social smile — usually appearing around 6 to 8 weeks — one of the most heart-melting moments of early parenthood.

3 to 6 Months: Growing Curiosity

This stage brings a real burst of personality. Your baby will start laughing, reaching out and grabbing objects, and by around 4 to 5 months many babies can roll from their tummy to their back. Babbling sounds like ‘baba’ and ‘gaga’ will start to emerge. Regular tummy time during this stage helps build the strength needed for future milestones.

6 to 9 Months: Sitting and Exploring

By around 6 months, most babies can sit with support, and by 9 months many can sit unsupported and play with toys. Stranger anxiety may appear as your baby shows a clear preference for familiar faces — a wonderful sign of healthy emotional development. Weaning onto solid foods typically begins around 6 months too.

9 to 12 Months: On the Move

Most babies will begin crawling, pulling themselves to standing, and cruising along furniture. Some will take their first independent steps — typically anywhere between 9 and 18 months. You may also hear those first meaningful words: ‘mama’ and ‘dada’ are often among the first.

What If My Baby Is Not Hitting Milestones?

Milestones are guides, not deadlines. If you have any concerns about your baby’s development, always speak to your GP or health visitor. Early intervention, if needed, makes a real difference — and you know your baby better than anyone. Remember that premature babies should be measured against their corrected age, not their birth date.

It all starts before birth — book a private pregnancy scan at MyBaby Ultrasound in Camberley and begin that bond during pregnancy itself.
