Gender Reveal Scan: When Can You Find Out the Sex of Your Baby?

One of the most exciting questions in pregnancy is: are we having a boy or a girl? Whether you are eager to start planning, want to organise a gender reveal party, or simply can’t wait to know, a private gender reveal scan is a wonderful way to find out — often weeks earlier than the NHS 20-week scan.

When Can You Find Out the Sex of Your Baby?
From 16 weeks — the earliest recommended time for a reliable private gender scan, with accuracy of over 99%
16 to 20 weeks — the ideal window for the clearest and most confident result
18 to 21 weeks — when the NHS 20-week anomaly scan may reveal the sex
Up to 40 weeks — gender scans can be done at any point in the second or third trimester
Why Can’t You Find Out Earlier?
Before around 14 to 16 weeks, the external genitalia of boys and girls look almost identical on a scan. Attempting a gender scan too early increases the risk of an incorrect result, which is why most reputable clinics recommend waiting until at least 16 weeks.
How Accurate Is a Gender Reveal Scan?
When performed from 16 weeks onwards by an experienced sonographer, accuracy is typically over 99%. If your baby’s position makes it difficult to confirm on the day, most private clinics offer a free rescan.
Want to Keep It a Surprise?
Not everyone wants to find out in the scan room! Simply let your sonographer know in advance. They can write the sex down, seal it in an envelope, and hand it to a trusted friend or family member to organise a gender reveal party.
