Packing your hospital bag is one of those satisfying pregnancy milestones that makes everything feel very real. Whether you are a first-time parent or adding to your family, having the right things packed and ready to go means one less thing to worry about when the big day arrives. Here is a comprehensive UK hospital bag checklist to help you prepare.

When Should I Pack My Hospital Bag?
Most midwives and NHS guidance recommend having your bag packed and ready by 36 to 37 weeks of pregnancy — or earlier if you are expecting twins or have had any pregnancy complications. Babies do not always wait for their due date, so being prepared early gives you real peace of mind.
Many parents find it helpful to pack two separate bags — one for labour and delivery, and a second for the postnatal stay in case you are kept in overnight.
What to Pack for Labour
Your maternity notes and birth plan
Loose, comfortable clothing to wear during labour
Dressing gown and slippers or flip-flops
Socks — your feet can get cold during labour
Snacks and a water bottle — labour can be long!
Phone and charger — fully charged for timing contractions and sharing the news
Lip balm — breathing through contractions can dry your lips out quickly
Any medication you normally take
TENS machine if you plan to use one for pain relief (with spare batteries)
What to Pack for Your Postnatal Stay
2 to 3 changes of comfortable clothing and front-opening nightwear for breastfeeding
5 to 6 pairs of knickers — disposable ones are very practical
2 to 3 nursing or supportive bras
2 packets of super-absorbent maternity pads
Breast pads
Wash bag with toiletries — toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, flannel, lip balm
Towels and your own pillow if you prefer
Eye mask and earplugs — postnatal wards can be bright and noisy
Comfortable going-home outfit — remember your bump will still be visible for a while
What to Pack for Your Baby
3 or more babygros and vests — babies go through a lot of changes!
A hat, socks, and mittens
Nappies and cotton wool for nappy changes
Muslin cloths and a soft blanket
A special coming home outfit if you have one
Ready-made formula and bottles if you are formula feeding — many hospitals cannot make up powdered formula
A car seat — essential for getting home safely
Don’t Forget Your Birth Partner
Your birth partner will thank you for reminding them to pack their own bag too! They will need a change of clothes, toothbrush and toiletries, their phone charger, snacks and drinks, money for the car park and vending machines, and any medication they take.
Prepare for Birth with a Private Scan
As you prepare your hospital bag, it is also a great time to consider a private scan to check your baby's position and wellbeing in the final weeks of pregnancy. At MyBaby Ultrasound in Camberley, our friendly sonographers are here to give you the reassurance and connection you need as you approach your due date.
