What Does a Baby Look Like at 12 Weeks?
By 12 weeks, your baby is unmistakably human. Their head is still large in proportion—around a third of their total body length—but the facial features are now clearly defined. The eyes have moved from the sides of the head to the front of the face. The ears are in their correct position. The nose, lips, and chin are all formed. Tiny fingernails are beginning to develop, and the fingers and toes are fully separated.
What Is Developing at 12 Weeks?
By the end of the first trimester, almost all of your baby’s major organs and body systems are in place. The critical period of formation is largely complete. Here’s what is happening at 12 weeks:
Heart: Beating strongly at around 160 to 170 beats per minute and clearly visible on the scan.
Brain: The two hemispheres are fully formed, and the brain is developing rapidly.
Digestive System: The intestines, which were previously growing into the umbilical cord, have now moved back into the abdominal cavity.
Kidneys: Beginning to produce urine, which your baby passes into the amniotic fluid.
Reflexes: Your baby can now open and close their fists, curl their toes, and make sucking movements with their mouth.
Bones: Hardening from cartilage throughout the body and visible on ultrasound.
Sex Organs: Fully formed internally, though it’s still too early to determine the sex reliably on scan. This becomes possible from 16 weeks.
