The 20-week scan — also called the anatomy scan or mid-pregnancy scan — is one of the most eagerly anticipated moments of your entire pregnancy journey. It is usually offered between 18 and 22 weeks and gives you and your healthcare team a detailed look at how your baby is growing and developing.

What Is the 20-Week Scan?

The 20-week scan is a detailed ultrasound examination that checks your baby's anatomy from head to toe. Unlike earlier scans which focus on dating the pregnancy, this scan is a thorough structural survey of your baby's development. Your baby is roughly the size of a banana — around 25–30 cm — and the scan typically lasts between 30 and 45 minutes.

What Does the Sonographer Check?

  • The brain, skull, and facial features (eyes, nose, lips)

  • The heart — checking all four chambers and major vessels

  • The spine, checking for neural tube development

  • The abdomen, stomach, kidneys, and bladder

  • The arms, legs, hands, and feet

  • The placenta position, umbilical cord, and amniotic fluid levels

Can You Find Out the Sex at the 20-Week Scan?

Yes! If your baby is in a cooperative position, your sonographer may be able to tell you whether you are having a boy or a girl. Sex determination at this stage is not always 100% accurate — it depends on the baby’s position, image quality, and your sonographer’s view on the day. For a dedicated gender reveal scan with a greater chance of a clear view, a private scan is a wonderful option.

How Should I Prepare?

  • Drink water beforehand — a full bladder improves image quality

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing

  • Bring your partner or a loved one to share the moment

  • Write down any questions for your sonographer in advance
